Besix
In De Gavers in Stasegem, De Watergroep has been producing drinking water from surface water out of the Bossuit-Kortrijk canal. An installation that has been delivering 15.000 m³ of water per day since 1995 and, thanks to a second production line in 2005, even up tot 32.000 m³. A thorough renovation and expansion of the capacity will now push that volume up to 50.000 m³. Indinox is contributing to this project as a subcontractor of construction company Besix.

“When it comes to industrial piping, Besix knows exactly what to expect from us. They appreciate our knowhow. Over the years, a great deal of trust has been built up in various projects."

Privileged partner
This is not the first time rodeo for the two parties. “When it comes to industrial piping, Besix knows exactly what to expect from us. They appreciate our knowhow. Over the years, a great deal of trust has been built up in various projects,” says project manager Stéphane De Coninck. During the work on the De Gavers drinking water station, the piping was spread over several lots due to the size of the project. Indinox was assigned the complete assembly of the drinking water pipes. “The piping was delivered to the site as a construction kit. It was up to us to put the puzzle together according to the 3D model and the drawings provided by Besix and De Watergroep.”

Handle with care and safety
With diameters up to DN 900, this is not an easy job in any case. On top of that, the pipes require the utmost care. They have a special white coating on the inside and outside to make them maintenance-free and suitable for drinking water use because they cannot release harmful substances. “Expensive piping, therefore, that must not suffer damage under any circumstances. That is exactly why we were chosen to take on this project. We have the in-house expertise to handle the installation and fitting with the necessary caution thanks to our experience in the water sector. And we know what it takes to safely and professionally install pipes of such diameters on different floors”, Stéphane says.
Every deadline met
The work for Indinox started in October 2023 and is still ongoing. Besix had a clear bill of quantities with a description of what needed to be done for each part. “We started with a permanent team consisting of a foreman, a mechanic and two fitters. Thanks to our good organization, we can scale up when necessary during peak periods. This is important because diameters up to DN 900 aren’t as easily delivered to every location. That is why we really had to follow the pace of the construction work strictly in function of the phases of the project and always in close consultation with Besix. We started in an empty warehouse, which makes everything easier. But when you add ceilings, walls, electrical wiring and so on, it becomes increasingly difficult to fit everything in. However, the team can be very proud, because we managed to check off every milestone Besix set over the past two years.”
Coordination is key
In addition to challenge brought on by the nature and size of the pipes themselves, the key to success in this project also lies in excellent coordination. “On the one hand between the pipe supplier, contractor Besix and ourselves. To ensure that the material is on site at the right time. And also between the various contractors who are working simultaneously on such a site. That requires good communication, coordination and cooperation between everyone to keep the work on schedule”, Stéphane adds. Indinox has already started a new collaboration with Besix for the pipework in the Hyoffwind hydrogen plant.
